1917-S Two Feathers FS-401 38443

I purchased the above coin raw and unattributed at a local coin dealer’s shop. It is now graded VF25 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I have a second coin I found raw and unattributed on eBay which now is graded VF20 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS. The two coins were struck from different dies. The VF25 coin is missing the designer’s initial F (also known as a 2FNF for Two Feather No F) while the second is not. The S mint marks also look distinctly different.

The 1917-S Two Feather can […]

1917-D Two Feather

1917-D Two Feathers FS-401 38442

I purchased the above coin raw and unattributed on eBay. It is now graded XF40 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I have a second coin in about Fine which has not been submitted to PCGS. Both coins appear to have been struck from the same pair of dies.

The 1917-D Two Feather is very close to a pure 2F. However there is a small faint remnant of a feather present.

Die 1. At high magnification you can see traces of the third feather, as a raised long, narrow island near the long […]

1917 Two Feathers FS-401 38440

I purchased the above coin raw and unattributed on eBay. It is now graded XF40 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I have a second coin in about the same grade which PCGS attributed but considered Genuine, 92 = Cleaned. It does have a bit of unusual “glow” to it ): The two coins were struck from different dies.

The 1917 Two Feather can be a pure 2F. For at least one pair of abraded dies, the third feather is completely missing. My “Genuine” 1917 2F is such a coin. The XF 40 […]

1916 Two Feather

1916 Two Feathers FS-402 395248

I purchased this coin raw on Ebay. Subsequently, I submitted it to PCGS. They graded it AU50 and attributed it Two Feathers variety. I have several other 1916 2F varieties, all purchased raw on Ebay. One of these grades about the same as this one but is a later die state coin. One of the images below is of this coin. The 1916 2F is not a difficult variety to find unattributed.

The 1916 Two Feather is a “pure” 2F. There are at least three pairs of abraded dies with the third feather completely […]

1915 Two Feather

1915 Two Feathers FS-401 38433

I obtained the 1915 2F imaged above in a trade with a fellow collector. It is in a PCGS VF35 slab. I have found an unattributed 1915 2F on Ebay, but it has a hint of a feather and only grades about VF20. I have not submitted it to PCGS for attribution.

The 1915 Two Feather can be a “pure” 2F, with the third feather entirely abraded. The PCGS coin above is such an example. The area of the abraded feather is not as “smooth” as on the 1913-D 2F. The abrasion marks […]

1913-D Type I Two Feather

1913-D Type I Two Feathers FS-401 38429

I found this coin on Ebay in an NGC MS63 slab. I broke it out of the slab and submitted it raw to PCGS. It came back MS64 and attributed as a Two Feather variety.

The 1913-d T1 Two Feather is not a “pure” 2F. On examples I’ve seen, the feather is mostly but not entirely missing. Sometimes you have to tilt the coin just right to see the “island” of still raised metal. Sometimes at a specific angle you can even see the outline of a somewhat reduced third feather. However, […]

Two Feather Abraded Die Varieties

Composite normal

As with all Abraded Die Varieties (ADVs), Two Feather varieties were created after some damage occurred to a die, typically from a die clash. If the clash occurred in the vicinity of the Indian’s small feather, the small feather may have been removed when a mint employee attempted to remove the evidence of the die clash.

What do clashed dies look like? What parts of the reverse die make an impression on the obverse die? The fields are the highest parts of the dies and consequently are the parts likely to collide hardest. The impressions left behind will be […]
