1919 Two Feathers FS-401 38448

I purchased the above coin raw and attributed on the bid board at a local brick and mortar coin dealer. It is now graded VF35 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I own a second 1919 2F, graded F15 attributed 2F by PCGS. I now also own a 1919 2F graded NGC AU58 but unattributed. It will be going to PCGS. And I own two other raw 1919 2Fs, both in Fine, more or less. They do not all appear to have been struck from the same pair of dies. But the story […]

1930-S Two Feathers FS-401 38455

I purchased this coin from a fellow buffalo nickel variety collector, attributed and raw. It is now graded VF35 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS. I also own a raw 1930-S 2F grading about VF and another also about VF, except for the environmental damage and cleaning I believe all three coins were struck using the same pair of dies.

The 1930-S Two Feather is a pure 2F, no trace of the third feather remains.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1930-S 2F PCGS VF35. The mint did a thorough job removing the third feather with […]

1925-S Two Feathers FS-401 38455

I purchased this coin on Teletrade, graded AU53 by PCGS and unattributed. It is now attributed Two Feathers by PCGS and is the PCGS “pop top” with a population of 1 and 0 higher (pop 1/0). I also own a raw 1925-S grading about VF. I believe the coins were struck using the same obverse die.

The 1925-S Two Feather is a pure 2F, no trace of the third feather remains. Pope reports two or likely three dies for this date.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1925-S 2F PCGS AU53. The mint did a thorough […]

1925-D Two Feathers FS-401 38453

I received this coin, graded F12 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS, in trade from a fellow buffalo nickel variety collector. I also own a 1925-D graded VG10 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS. I believe the coins were struck from the same pair of dies.

The 1925-D Two Feather is not a pure 2F, part of the feather remains. The remaining part includes a small, weakened portion of the outline of the original feather. Pope does not report multple dies for this date.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1925-D 2F PCGS F12. While […]

1921-S Two Feather

1921-S Two Feathers FS-401 38452

I purchased the above coin unattributed in a PCGS holder on eBay. It is graded F15 and now attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I also own a 1921-S 2F, grading Fine but that PCGS labeled Genuine (damaged), likely because of the laminations and some marks. I believe the coins were struck from different pairs of dies.

The 1921-S Two Feather often is a true 2F with no trace of a third feather. Both of these coins are true 2Fs. Pope reports that there are at least two different 2F dies for the 1921-S, […]

I purchased the above coin raw and attributed from a fellow buffalo nickel variety collector. It is now graded XF45 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I also own a raw 1921 2F, grading Very Fine. They likely were struck from different pairs of dies.

The 1921 Two Feather often is a true 2F with no trace of a third feather. The PCGS graded coin is a true 2F. Pope reports that there are at least three different 2F dies for 1921.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1921 2F PCGS XF45. The mint did […]

1920-S Two Feathers

1920-S Two Feathers FS-401 38450

I purchased the above coin raw and unattributed on eBay. It is now graded F12 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I own a second 1920-S 2F, graded VG10 attributed 2F by PCGS. And I own two raw 1920-S 2Fs, both in about Fine. When I began this post I thought all four coins were struck from the same die pair. However, upon closer inspection (required by taking all the photos!), I now believe three pairs of dies were used to strike these coins. I think.

The 1920-S Two Feather can be a […]

1918 Two Feathers

1918 Two Feathers FS-401 38445

I purchased the above coin raw and unattributed on eBay. It is now graded VF25 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I own a second 1918 2F attributed by PCGS and graded F12. I can not determine definitively whether these two coins were minted from the same or different dies.

The 1918 Two Feather can be a pure 2F as this example shows.

Die 1. 1918 2F, VF25. At high magnification you can see abrasion lines running roughly North East to South West with no trace of the third feather. Although less prominent, […]

1918-S Two Feathers

1918-S Two Feathers FS-401 38447

I purchased the above coin raw and attributed from Larry Briggs Rare Coins. It is now graded XF45 and attributed Two Feathers variety by PCGS. I have owned other 1918-S 2F buffaloes in the past including two that I submitted and had attributed by PCGS, a VG10 and a VF30. I don’t have an image of the VF30, but the XF45, the VG10, and a raw 1918-S 2F that I own, all seem to have been struck from the same pair of dies – they have the same extensive clash marks.

The 1918-S Two […]
