1926-D (3HL)

Lewis5c1926d3hl

Check this out. I picked this one about a year ago, -found out that PCGS was finally attributing them, and sent it in. I got it back last Saturday morning after 4 weeks of waiting. I listed it Saturday night, and it only lasted a few hours. As you probably know, -they’re almost impossible to find without problems, and just as impossible to find in grades better than Fine. This one was in an ANACS XF45 slab originally.

This is a picture of the obverse of that 26D3HL. -I was able to use the obverse picture to cherry […]

1919 (2F)

Blog5c1919 2FO N58

I consider finding any (unattributed) upgrade for my set a pick at this point. Recently, while strolling through eBay, I came upon an NGC AU58 1919 buffalo nickle. While the image wasn’t the sharpest, the Indian appeared to be missing a feather. It was available BuyItNow or MakeAnOffer. Since it was late at night, I BIN’ed it. It arrived a week or two ago:

The feather is not completely missing, but I think it is close enough, particularly through a 5x glass. If PCGS agrees, it will be a new pop top Frazier’s initial also is kind of weak.

Favorite Picks

Every now and then we obtain a special coin, a favorite pick. It may be special because of the variety it represents, or the way it was obtained, or its appearance, or more generally, its story. This is a new category for people to tell those stories. If you would like to list some of your favorite picks and tell their story, without images, you can Comment on this post (eventually I will figure out how to allow images in Comments, but so far I haven’t). If you would like to include images, then please start a new post, and […]

1930-S Two Feather

1930-S Two Feathers FS-401 38455

I purchased this coin from a fellow buffalo nickel variety collector, attributed and raw. It is now graded VF35 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS. I also own a raw 1930-S 2F grading about VF and another also about VF, except for the environmental damage and cleaning I believe all three coins were struck using the same pair of dies.

The 1930-S Two Feather is a pure 2F, no trace of the third feather remains.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1930-S 2F PCGS VF35. The mint did a thorough job removing the third feather with […]

1925-S Two Feathers FS-401 38455

I purchased this coin on Teletrade, graded AU53 by PCGS and unattributed. It is now attributed Two Feathers by PCGS and is the PCGS “pop top” with a population of 1 and 0 higher (pop 1/0). I also own a raw 1925-S grading about VF. I believe the coins were struck using the same obverse die.

The 1925-S Two Feather is a pure 2F, no trace of the third feather remains. Pope reports two or likely three dies for this date.

1925-D Two Feather

1925-D Two Feathers FS-401 38453

I received this coin, graded F12 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS, in trade from a fellow buffalo nickel variety collector. I also own a 1925-D graded VG10 and attributed Two Feathers by PCGS. I believe the coins were struck from the same pair of dies.

The 1925-D Two Feather is not a pure 2F, part of the feather remains. The remaining part includes a small, weakened portion of the outline of the original feather. Pope does not report multple dies for this date.

Die 1. Coin 1. 1925-D 2F PCGS F12. While […]
